They truly are a site to behold and it really is an unforgettable day out! Humpback whales can grow up to 16 metres long and weigh on average 20 tons. Females, slightly larger than males, can weigh up to 40 tons. Despite their enormous proportions, they are known for their docile temperament and famous for their acrobatic 'stunts' and the loud calls they make during their reproductive period.
A particularly striking feature of this species is the long, pectoral fins that reach nearly 1/3 of their total body length. This helps them to move at speeds of up to 27 km/h. The humpback whales population before hunting was estimated to be at about 150,000 individuals, where as today it is estimated at less than 25,000 - distributed in all the oceans. They are still officially listed as an endangered animal. This tour starts from Concha beach. The group will meet for a brief presentation, about 15 to 20 minutes long, where you will be given a briefing on these fascinating animals.
The route taken in the boat is approximately 15 miles (+/-30 km) long. If the ocean is too rough, the trip may be cancelled. In this case the tour will be re-scheduled for another date if possible OR a full refund will be given.
Frequency: Daily (from the end of July to October).
Transport: Catamaran boat, 24 feet with two 90 HP engines, fully equipped and accompanied by an experienced crew. Authorised to carry up to 13 passengers and 3 crew members.
